Drivers ask
What is the difference between original and aftermarket parts?
Original parts come from the vehicle manufacturer or its supplier and match the series specification. Aftermarket parts are produced by third parties and vary in fit, material thickness and coating. For safety relevant components that difference is technically significant.
Can I choose the workshop myself?
As a rule yes, and recommendations from an insurer are offers rather than instructions. What matters technically is that the repair follows manufacturer specifications with documented parts and work steps, because both safety and the later value of the vehicle depend on it.
What is an independent motor vehicle expert?
A specialist who documents and values damage on behalf of the injured party rather than the paying party. Independence means no tie to an insurer and no interest in the outcome. The expert signs the report personally and answers for its accuracy.
When is a vehicle a total loss?
In economic terms when repair costs exceed what the vehicle is worth, taking the residual value into account. Settlement is then based on market value minus residual value. Both figures have to be supported by dated comparable offers, otherwise the calculation is not verifiable.
Is the initial assessment from photos really free?
Yes. You send photos of the damage and a short description on WhatsApp, and you receive an answer on whether a full report is justified and what else is worth documenting. It creates no obligation. Sometimes the answer is that a report would not pay off, and we say so.
What is the European Accident Statement and must I fill it in?
It is a standard form on which both drivers record what happened. There is no obligation to use it, but it orders the facts and exists in parallel language versions. The sketch and both signatures matter most; signing is not an admission of fault.
How do I report a damage case to MOTOEXPERT?
The fastest route is WhatsApp: send photos of the damage and a short description of what happened. You receive a free initial assessment and information on what to document next. If a full report makes sense, we agree on the inspection date, location and terms.
How quickly can an inspection be arranged?
Usually within one or two working days of the assignment. For damage abroad the date depends on the location and on access to the vehicle. We confirm a binding date once the case has been described, and we say clearly if the location is difficult.
Which situation is yours?
Pick the closest description — WhatsApp opens with a prepared message. If none fits, choose the last one.
We reply in English, German and Polish.
Road accident in Slovenia — independent vehicle damage appraisal (MOTOEXPERT network)
- An accident in Slovenia is governed by Slovenian law (Rome II Regulation, Art. 4) — regardless of where the vehicle is registered.
- Compensation claims generally become time-barred three years after you learn of the damage and the liable party, and no later than five years after the event (Obligations Code, Art. 352).
- MOTOEXPERT prepares an independent technical appraisal: repair costs, market value of the vehicle, diminished value — in English, German, Slovenian and Polish.
First steps after an accident in Slovenia
Secure the scene and call the police (113 or 112) if anyone is injured or liability is disputed. Complete the European Accident Statement, photograph the position of the vehicles, number plates, damage and the insurance details of the other party. If the other vehicle is foreign, note the data from the green card. Your own photo documentation is key evidence.
Legal framework: applicable law and deadlines
An accident on Slovenian territory is governed by the law of the place of the accident — Slovenian tort law (Rome II Regulation, Art. 4). The injured party may claim directly against the liability insurer of the party at fault (Motor Vehicle Owners Compulsory Insurance Act). Claims generally become time-barred after three years from knowledge of the damage and the liable party, and after five years from the event at the latest (Obligations Code, Art. 352). For damage caused by foreign or uninsured vehicles, the central institution is the Slovenian Insurance Association (SZZ), which also administers the guarantee fund.
Cross-border cases: Slovenia, Germany and the EU
If you live in Germany or another EU country and had an accident in Slovenia — or the other way round, as a Slovenian resident involved in an accident in Germany — Directive 2009/103/EC guarantees that every insurer in the EEA has a claims representative in your country of residence. The procedure can be handled from home, in your own language. The MOTOEXPERT network has been working on exactly such cross-border cases for over 25 years, with particular experience in the German claims settlement system — which also matters for the transit corridor towards Croatia and Italy.
What an independent appraisal covers
An independent vehicle damage expert documents the damage in evidential quality and determines repair costs, the replacement (market) value of the vehicle, the residual (salvage) value, the diminished market value after repair and, where applicable, the cost of a replacement vehicle. The appraisal is the technical basis of your claim against the insurer — independent of the adjuster sent by the insurer. MOTOEXPERT acts exclusively as an independent technical appraiser (a network of certified German Kfz-Sachverstaendige); for legal representation we recommend, on request, a cooperating lawyer specialised in traffic law.
Casco or third-party liability — two routes, one standard
We support injured parties in claims against the insurer of the party at fault, and vehicle owners in Casco cases against their own insurer. We focus on economically relevant damages from approximately EUR 10,000 upwards — vans, fleets, premium vehicles — including the full logistics: on-site inspection, photo documentation via WhatsApp, coordination with the workshop and the insurer.
