Toll plazas, barriers and lane equipment in Croatia
Every long drive through the country funnels into the same few metres of concrete, and there the vehicle stops meeting other cars and starts meeting equipment. <b>A barrier arm, a kerb and a sensor lane damage a car in ways no collision does</b> โ and each of them belongs to somebody.
Why this is a subject of its own
The other party is a machine. At a plaza the vehicle meets a barrier arm that descends on a fixed path, an island kerb that never moves and a lane narrowed by posts. None of them brakes or gives way, so the marks they leave are unusually regular and easy to read.
The ground and the equipment belong to the operator. The plaza is managed space with its own staff, cameras and incident record, and a broken barrier arm is somebody else's property. One moment therefore produces two descriptions: one of the vehicle, one of the installation.
Boundary: queueing traffic and low-speed contact between vehicles at the approach belong to the road entries covering those sections. This one stays with the equipment itself.
What happens at the lane and what it does to the car
The barrier arm. It falls vertically after the vehicle in front, so it strikes the roof, the tailgate, the rear screen or a roof-mounted aerial rather than the front of the car. The mark runs across the vehicle, not along it, and its height matches the pivot of the arm.
The island and its kerb. Islands are narrow and their kerbs are raised, so wheels, rims, sills and the lower edge of the bumper take the contact. Damage on both sides of the same vehicle usually means the lane was entered at an angle, not that there were two events.
The electronic lane. A lane read by a transponder is passed at speed, with a short following distance and a change of line just before it. In summer the same lanes carry trailers and vans driven by people using the plaza for the first time, and reversing out of the wrong lane is a common start to the sequence.
What to record and where the inspection happens
Stop where it is safe, but photograph the vehicle in the lane before it is moved, with the equipment and the lane number in the same frame. That number is what allows the operator to find the moment on the recording.
Measure the height of the mark above the road surface, on the vehicle and on the equipment in the same way. A barrier arm, a kerb and a post sit at three clearly different heights, and this single figure normally identifies the object.
Ask the staff for a short written note with the date, the time and the lane, and keep the toll receipt: it is created automatically and ties the vehicle, the place and the minute together. We come to the vehicle, usually within one or two days and anywhere along the route.

- The barrier came down on the roof of my car. How is that assessed?
- As a vertical contact with a known object, which makes it one of the clearer cases. The mark crosses the vehicle rather than running along it, and its height corresponds to the pivot of the arm. Photograph the roof, the rear screen and the arm itself, then measure the height before anything is moved.
- I clipped the kerb of the island. Is that a claim or ordinary wear?
- That depends on what the wheel and the suspension show, not on the size of the scrape. Kerb contact at a plaza happens at low speed but at an angle, so the rim, the tyre wall and the track setting are all checked. A photograph of the kerb beside the vehicle explains more than the wheel alone.
- Nobody came out of the booth and the recording will be gone soon.
- Then ask in writing the same day, giving the lane number, the date and the time to the minute. Keep the receipt, because it fixes exactly those details on its own. The assessment of the vehicle does not depend on the recording, but the account of how the damage happened often does.
