Šibenik, Krka and the central Dalmatian coast: the stretch between Biograd and Trogir

Between Biograd and Trogir the traffic changes character. The A1 still runs inland and fast, but almost everyone leaves it: for the Krka waterfalls, for the campsites around Vodice, for the Murter bridge or for a berth in a marina. Damage on this stretch happens after the exit.

Two roads, two kinds of damage

The corridor has a fast inland spine and a slow coastal one. The A1 passes Šibenik at a distance, with exits at Skradin, Šibenik and Vrpolje; the old coastal road runs through Pirovac, Vodice, Primošten and Rogoznica. Between them lies a web of local roads carrying the summer traffic.

On the motorway the pattern is the usual one: queues at the toll plazas, lane-change contact before the exits, stone chips from freight. Off it the pattern changes completely: local roads are narrow, edged with dry-stone walls and pines, and shared with coaches and cars towing boat trailers.

The most common damage here is not a collision at all. It is parking damage: the car parks at the national park entrances, at the marinas and in the campsite belt fill by mid-morning, the bays are tight, and the surface is often gravel with a raised edge. Rims, sills, bumper corners and underbody trims take most of it.

Krka, the campsites and the boat trailer

Two features of the area create claims drivers do not expect. The first is the national park. Traffic to Skradin and Lozovac concentrates into a few hours, the approach roads are single-lane with passing places, and attendants direct cars into rows. If the vehicle is damaged there, note who directed it and where it stood before the row is cleared.

The second is the boat trailer. This coast has more of them than any other section, and a trailer is a separately registered vehicle with its own documents. Photograph both plates, both units and the coupling before anything is moved or unhitched.

Storm damage is a summer subject here too. Cars parked under pines at campsites and marinas collect branch and resin damage in the first hour of a squall, and it looks trivial photographed from three metres away. Take it close, from the side, and photograph the tree and the car together.

Police, recovery and where the vehicle waits

For a foreign-plated vehicle the written confirmation from the local police is the document that makes the event verifiable later, and it has to be obtained here, at the time. Requesting it from another country weeks afterwards works rarely, and by then the vehicle has moved.

Recovery from this section goes to Šibenik, Vodice or Split. Ask for the destination and the name of the company at the scene and write both down. Storage in season is charged daily and the yards are small, so the interval to the inspection is worth compressing.

One local detail is worth knowing. Some islands off this coast are reached by boat rather than by bridge, so the vehicle stays on the mainland while its owner is away. If damage is found on return, the record starts from the state of the car and the place it stood.

Frequently asked questions

My car was damaged in a full car park near the Krka entrance. What should I record?

The position of the vehicle before the row is cleared, the neighbouring cars, the surface and the edge of the bay, and the damage in close-up from the side. Note the time and, if an attendant directed the parking, that too. An empty car park photographed next morning proves nothing.

The boat trailer was damaged, not the car. Is that one claim or two?

The trailer is a separately registered vehicle with its own documents, and it is assessed on its own: frame, axle, lights, coupling and the winch or supports. Whether both run in one file depends on the insurer, but the documentation has to keep them apart from the first photograph.

Do I need the police if the damage is minor and nobody else is involved?

For a vehicle on foreign plates a written confirmation obtained locally is worth far more than the time it costs, because it fixes date and place while both can still be checked. Whether it is required in your case is a question for your insurer or a recommended lawyer.
