Rockfall, scree and landslide damage on Croatian roads

Croatian coastal and mountain roads run under rock for hundreds of kilometres, and after storms or a spring thaw part of that rock ends up on the carriageway. <b>Damage from material off the slope is documented differently from an ordinary chip, because the place, the hour and the weather are part of the evidence.</b>

Where this happens and why

The coastal road under the mountain. The D8 below Velebit and the Biokovo, the descents into the Zrmanja and Cetina canyons and the road over Učka run with rock on one side and little space on the other. Material that comes down has nowhere to stop before the lane.

Gorski kotar and the Lika roads. Heavy rain and the freeze and thaw of early spring loosen the slope; slides carry stones onto bends where the sight line ends at the rock face.

The season is not summer. Most of these events belong to autumn storms, winter and the first warm weeks, which is when the roads are empty and there is no witness.

How this differs from the other entries. Road works with fresh chippings have their own entry, and so does the bora, which moves air and light objects rather than rock.

What the damage looks like and what it proves

A single strike, not a season. One identifiable event leaves one impact with a clear centre, radiating cracks in glass and often a second mark from the bounce. Damage spread over weeks looks different and cannot be attributed to a day.

Height and direction. A stone off the slope arrives from above and to the side; one thrown by a passing vehicle arrives low and from the front. The height of the impact tells them apart.

The material stays behind. Rock dust, limestone grit and soil in the impact and in the door shuts belong to the record, and they are the first thing a car wash removes.

The underside counts too. Driving over material already on the road damages the sump guard, exhaust and suspension, and those findings appear only on a lift.

What to do at the scene

Photograph before moving the vehicle, with the slope, the rock on the road and the car in one frame. That image places the event and cannot be reconstructed later.

Record place and time exactly: road number, nearest kilometre marker or tunnel, hour and weather. Closures published for that stretch on that day support the account.

Keep the stone if it is safe to do so. Material from the slope differs visibly from road chippings.

Report it where the road is managed. A note taken by the police or the road operator on the day is worth more than a description written at home.

Do not wash the vehicle, because the dust in the impact is what connects the damage to the place.

The check worth asking for: an inspection that measures the height and direction of the impact and looks at the underside, before any glass is replaced.

It is a documented event, and where cover exists it is normally handled through comprehensive insurance. Whether anyone else carries responsibility depends on the stretch and is a question for a recommended lawyer. How can a stone from the slope be told apart from one thrown by another car?
By height, angle and material. Material off a slope arrives from above and to the side, leaves its impact higher on the glass or on the roof and often carries rock dust with it. A stone from a wheel arrives low and from the front, with a flatter angle.
I only noticed the crack in the windscreen the next morning.
That is common, because a chip opens into a crack overnight with the change in temperature. Photograph it as it is now, note where and when the strike happened, and mention the delay openly. An honest sequence is easier to support than a tidy one.
