Prekodravlje: the part of Croatia on the far bank of the Drava
The border here follows the course the river had before it was straightened, not the course it has now. The result is a piece of Croatia on the northern bank, and the only road home crosses a bridge.
What this area is
The municipality of Gola lies in Koprivnica-Križevci County. The 2021 census recorded 2,078 residents across 75.9 km² in five settlements: Gola with 779, Ždala with 461, Novačka with 343, Gotalovo with 281 and Otočka with 214.
The area is called Prekodravlje — literally the land beyond the Drava. The border was set along the course of the river and stayed there while the river shifted and was straightened, which is why Croatian settlements sit on the northern bank and the frontier runs around them on three sides.
Boundary: the long trunk route along the river further east has its own entry, and so do the roads south of it. This one covers the pocket itself. The D210 runs 24.3 km from Virje through Molve, Repaš and Ždala to meet the D41 near Gola, crossing the Drava on a bridge 372 m long.
What tends to happen here
Almost no traffic, and therefore almost no witnesses. The counting point at Virje records around 758 vehicles a day for the whole road. Minutes pass between vehicles, single-vehicle events dominate, and the traces at the scene are the entire evidence — which is why photographs taken before recovery decide what can be shown afterwards.
One bridge, and everything depends on it. The crossing of the Drava is the only link to the rest of the country. Recovery, the workshop and the inspection are all on the far side of it, and a vehicle that cannot be moved waits where it stands. Note at the scene which side of the bridge you are on.
The floodplain and the language. Woodland and grazing land reach the carriageway between the villages, so game crosses at dawn and dusk and the time of day belongs in every record. In Ždala almost all residents speak a Hungarian dialect while declaring themselves Croats, and the nearest help in any direction but south is across the border.
Where the vehicle is inspected
Recovery goes south over the bridge, because there is no workshop in the pocket. Ask at the scene where the vehicle is being taken and write the name down before you leave the place.
We come to the vehicle. Appointments here are normally possible within one to two days; give us the village name rather than the road number, because on this network the village is the more useful address.
If a foreign vehicle was involved, photograph its plate and its insurance details on the spot. Here the border is a few minutes away in most directions, and once it has been crossed none of that is easy to obtain.
Frequently asked questions
- How quickly can a vehicle be inspected in Prekodravlje?
- Normally within one to two days. What matters is where the vehicle was recovered to, because there is no workshop among the villages and it will have been taken over the bridge. Tell us the location and we will arrange the appointment.
- There were no other vehicles and nobody saw it. What can still be shown?
- More than people expect, provided the scene is photographed before recovery. The final position of the vehicle, the marks on the surface, the edge of the carriageway and the damage height together describe a sequence that can be checked against the damage itself.
- The other driver had Hungarian plates and drove off towards the border.
- Note the registration, the make and the direction, and photograph anything left at the scene — glass, plastic, paint transfer. Report it locally the same day, because the vehicle will usually be in another jurisdiction within minutes and the physical traces are then all that remain.
