Lika: the A1 through the Sveti Rok tunnel and the old D1 across the plateau

Most drivers cross Lika without stopping, which is exactly what makes damage here awkward. The plateau is the coldest part of Croatia, the distances between exits are long, and the moment the A1 dives into the Sveti Rok tunnel the landscape on the other side is already a different climate.

The plateau, the tunnel and where this entry begins

The A1 crosses Lika from the Mala Kapela tunnel in the north to the Sveti Rok tunnel in the south, and the old D1 runs beside it through Otočac, Gospić and Gračac. The Sveti Rok tunnel is 5.68 kilometres long, with two tubes of 5679 and 5670 metres, carriageways 7.7 metres wide and speeds up to 100 km/h; the second tube opened in 2009 and the tubes are joined by four vehicle crossings and fifteen pedestrian passages.

Two roads, two different problems. The motorway is fast, fenced and monitored, with long gaps between exits. The old D1 is slower, unfenced and passes through villages, and it is the road drivers take when the motorway is closed or when they are heading for Plitvička jezera.

A boundary worth stating: the old D1 from Karlovac through Slunj has its own entry and covers the approach from the north; the descent to the coast with the Maslenica bridge belongs to the Zadar entry. This one is the plateau in between.

The damage patterns of this region

Winter arrives here first. Lika is the coldest part of the country and the plateau holds snow and ice when both Zagreb and the coast are clear. Loss of control on a bend of the D1, contact with a snow bank and damage from grit are the everyday winter picture, and the difference between the motorway surface and the old road can be a matter of a few hundred metres.

Animals on the unfenced road. The motorway is fenced; the D1 is not. Deer, wild boar and free-roaming livestock cross at dusk, and in this region a bear is a real if rare possibility. What matters afterwards is the same in every case: photograph the marks and the hair before the car is moved or washed.

Long distances without services. A breakdown or a damaged wheel between exits means a long wait and a long tow, and the nearest workshop may be an hour away. This is the part of the journey where a small problem becomes an expensive one, simply because of geography.

Where the vehicle gets inspected

Recovery from this stretch usually ends in Gospić, in Otočac, in Gračac or, depending on the direction, down in Zadar or up in Karlovac. Ask at the scene where the vehicle is going and write it down, because the two directions lead to completely different towns.

We come to the vehicle. Photograph at the scene before anything is moved: the whole car, the damaged area from two distances, and the surface with the road in the same frame. In the tunnel itself, safety comes first and documentation waits until the vehicle is outside.

If the car stays parked on the plateau in winter, record where it stands. A week under snow changes the appearance of the damage, and that change should not later be attributed to the event itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tunnel closed in winter?
The tunnel itself runs all year; what changes is the road on either side of it, where snow and ice arrive earlier than on the coast. Check the current traffic information before travelling, because restrictions on this stretch are announced at short notice and can differ for vehicles with trailers.
How quickly can a vehicle be inspected in Lika?
Usually within two days once we know where it stands. Gospić, Otočac and Gračac are small towns with limited capacity, so the appointment depends on the recovery destination rather than on the distance. Tell us the town and we arrange it from there.
An animal crossed on the old D1 at dusk. What should be photographed?
The marks on the vehicle from two distances, any hair or blood before the car is moved, the position on the road and the surroundings with the treeline in frame. If the police attend, note the reference. Do not wash the car before the damage has been recorded.
