Headlights and lighting after damage in Croatia
A lamp unit is no longer a lamp. On most cars sold in the last decade it is a sealed assembly with a control module and a levelling motor. <b>That is why a headlight can cost more than the bumper in front of it, and why a working lamp can still be a damaged one.</b>
Why this is a subject of its own
Lighting is used more here than visitors expect. For a large part of the year daytime lights are compulsory on Croatian roads, and the inland routes through Lika and Gorski kotar run unlit for long stretches.
The unit is an assembly, not a bulb. Housing, lens, levelling motor and control module form one part. Manufacturers rarely provide for opening it, so a small internal fault means the whole unit.
The mounting fails before the lens does. Plastic tabs break in impacts that leave the lens intact. The lamp stays lit, sits slightly askew, and is found only when someone measures the beam.
Boundaries. Heat and sun damage to a parked car, theft and break-in, and damage noticed after the journey home each have their own entry. This one is about the lighting units themselves.
What actually goes wrong
Front-end impacts. Even at low speed the lamp is loaded through the bumper and the crossmember. Broken tabs and a displaced housing are the usual finding, and neither stops the lamp working.
Water and condensation. A hairline crack or a disturbed seal lets in moisture. On the coast, salt-laden air accelerates what follows: corroded contacts, a failing module and clouding that returns after every drying.
Stone damage. Loose material behind other vehicles reaches the lens as readily as the windscreen. A pitted lens scatters light and changes the beam pattern, measurably so even when it looks trivial.
Aim, levelling and shared brackets. Any displacement changes the beam, so the aim has to be set again after front-end work. Radar and camera brackets often sit beside the lamp, and replacing a unit can require a calibration nobody costed.
What to record before anything is replaced
The unit in place, from the front and from above. The mounting tabs are visible from above with the bonnet open, and that is where the damage usually is.
The gaps around the lamp. Photograph the gap to the bonnet, the wing and the bumper on both sides. A displaced unit shows up as a difference between the two sides.
The lamp lit, at dusk, against a flat surface. A beam that sits high, low or crooked is easier to show in one photograph than to describe.
Any condensation, dated. Moisture that appears on cold mornings and clears by noon is still a fault, and a dated photograph proves it.

- The headlight still works and the lens is not broken. Is there anything to record?
- Usually there is. The mounting tabs behind the lens break in impacts that leave the visible part untouched, and a housing sitting a few millimetres out of position changes the beam. Both are visible from above with the bonnet open.
- There is condensation inside the lamp after a storm on the coast. Does that count?
- It does when the seal or the housing has been disturbed. Salt-laden air then works on the contacts and the module inside, and the clouding returns after every drying cycle. Photographs taken on several dates show the pattern.
- The other side was replaced and now the beams look different. Is that normal?
- It is common but not correct. A new unit has to be aimed to the vehicle, and cars with automatic levelling need the system reset after front-end work. A difference visible against a wall at dusk is reason enough to measure.
