Duga Resa, Ozalj and the Mrežnica valley west of Karlovac

This is where people from the capital go to the water, and the roads that take them there were built for villages rather than for weekend volumes. The pattern of claims follows that mismatch almost exactly.

What defines this area

Duga Resa sits on the Mrežnica, about 65 kilometres south-west of the capital and roughly 100 kilometres east of Rijeka. The municipality has 10 212 residents from the 2021 census and the town itself 5380, across 60.9 square kilometres of which only 3.5 are urban. Ozalj lies to the north-west, closer to the Slovenian border.

The rivers organise everything here. Roads follow the valleys rather than the shortest line, crossing them on narrow bridges and climbing out again in bends. Distances that look short on a map take much longer, and drivers who plan by the map arrive late and drive accordingly.

A boundary worth stating: the trunk road running south from the county town, the corridor towards the Slovenian border in the north and the motorway country further south each have their own entry. This one covers the river valleys in between.

Weekend traffic to the water. In summer the volume on these roads multiplies, with towed boats, roof boxes and drivers unfamiliar with the bends. Glancing contact on narrow sections and at bridge approaches is the recurring pattern, usually with marks above the bumper line.

Narrow bridges and blind bends. Where a road crosses a river the carriageway narrows without warning and there is no verge to use. Wheel, suspension and underbody damage follows from contact with the parapet or the kerb, and none of it is visible from outside.

Farm traffic and forest tracks. Tractors join from unsurfaced entrances and bring soil onto the surface. Loss of grip follows within minutes, and the road is usually cleared within hours, so a photograph of the surface is worth more than one of the car.

What to do and where the vehicle gets seen

Record the place so a stranger could find it again: the direction of travel, the nearest village sign or bridge, and the time. In valley country one bend looks much like the next, and a description without a landmark is not a location.

If a boat or a trailer was involved, photograph the coupling and the load as well as the vehicles. Damage from a trailer swinging on a narrow bend sits at a height that a photograph of the car alone does not explain.
